Your cast is set (4-Men, 3-Women), you’re two weeks out from the cast’s first read through, rehearsals start three weeks after that, and your show, NOW I GET IT, opens in April… Then BOOM!
In the space of 72 hours, because of life and potential career advancements, you lose two of your three women, and one of your men.
The show is rehearsing and opening in Las Vegas, but you, the director/producer, live in Mesa, AZ. You, the director, are old-school: Zoom auditions DO NOT work for you. You have to be in the room, sitting/standing/whatever, directly across from the actor auditioning. So, you now have to dip into what is already a tight production budget, and travel to Las Vegas to practically re-cast your show, BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE!
Your show is a… a musical/play with music,/whatever. Bottom line: everybody needs to be able to sing and sing well.
For some reason, I can’t recall the “how”, FROM OUT OF NO WHERE… comes my salvation: a SUPERWOMAN named SELMA GREER.
She is the Owner/Operator/Pres. of TRUTH MUSIC, in Las Vegas.
Selma coaches singers/actors of all ages, as well as represented artists. She has worked on/off stage, in front/and behind the camera in L.A. and Las Vegas… her Bio? Is a blog all its own, and we’ll get into it extensively later on.
So… Selma and I msg/text (it’s kind of a blur) each other. I tell her what I’m looking for and with in 72 hours after that, not only has she found a man and woman to replace the ones I lost, she has earned herself the lead female role, and she is now my musical director – allowing my former MD to solely concentrate on the role in the show I knew was perfect for her.
PLUS… Selma found us an accompanist. Something I had no luck finding before; which was forcing us to go with canned music.
I don’t believe in “coincidence” or “accidents” when it comes to the people that find/earn a place in my life… SELMA GREER IS NO ACCIDENT.
She brings a talent, skill, and mind set that is already taking NOW I GET IT to another level.
You’ll learn more about her in other posts, but one thing is for sure… Selma Greer: thy name is SUPERWOMAN!
